Johnson recommends some great Golden State road trips and praises California’s huge diversity of cultures, landscapes, and cuisines. When it comes to the latter, he says, “I’ve totally come to respect the strip mall.”

Author Tony Perrottet discusses visiting the historic places in his book, Cuba Libre!: Che, Fidel, and the Improbable Revolution That Changed History. And a guide with a company that offers tours of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine describes what it’s like to visit the post-apocalyptic site of the world’s worst nuclear power plant disaster. Each tour attendee is equipped with a Geiger counter to monitor radiation levels. Yikes.
